Fake Ledger Live app infiltrates Microsoft App Store, steals $588,000


According to investigator ZachXBT, nearly $600,000 in Bitcoin was stolen from users who downloaded a fake Ledger Live app from the Microsoft App Store.

On-chain analysts have detection The “Ledger Live Web3” scam, which occurred on November 5, tricked users into thinking they were downloading “Ledger Live”—the user interface for the Ledger hardware wallet’s offline storage of cryptocurrency.

according to Blockchain network, the scammer obtained approximately 16.8 BTC, worth $588,000, through 38 transactions using the wallet address “bc1q….y64q”. Across two transactions, the scammer was left with approximately $115,200 in his wallet, leaving him with $473,800 or 13.5 BTC.

In a follow-up post, ZachXBT explain Microsoft may have removed the fake Ledger Live app from its platform.

The first transaction sent to the scammer’s wallet address occurred on October 24 and was worth $5,210. Prior to this, the wallet had not been used. Most of these transactions occurred after November 2, with the largest transfer occurring on November 4, worth $81,200.

Through searches, fake “Ledger Live Web3” applications began to appear in Microsoft’s App Store on October 19.

ZackXBT explain They received two messages from victims on November 4, even arguing that Microsoft was “responsible” for allowing the fake Ledger Live app to appear in their app store.

This isn’t the first time a fake Ledger Live app has infiltrated Microsoft’s App Store.

Ledger’s support account on X (formerly Twitter) has been notify Users reported fake Ledger Live apps on two separate occasions in December and March.

Ledger has yet to comment on the scam, but has previously reiterated to users that the “only safe place” to download Ledger Live is its website, ledger.com.
